Seven Churches Tour

Day 1
 

Smyrna, Pergamum, Sardis

Greeted upon arrival at Izmir airport, your first visit will be to Ancient Smyrna, poor and persecuted, the church at Smyrna suffered amidst prosperity for its refusal to worship the Roman Emperor. Then we will lead to Pergamon which is home for two of the country's most celebrated archaeological sites: Acropolis and Asclepion. In the early Christian era, Pergamon's church was a major center of Christianity and was one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Drive to Sardis, another of the Seven Churches of Revelation. You will be impressed by the massive scale of the Temple of Artemis, by the white marble Royal Road, by the gymnasium, and by the synagogue.

Philadelphia, Laodicea, Hierapolis

After breakfast, we will drive for visit the site of Philadelphia also one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Today, not much is left to mark the spot. You will see an ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica. Then we will head to Laodicea where you will walk through the stadium and columned streets and a chance to witness the newest excavations in Laodicea. After you will continue to Hierapolis, an ancient city of pagan cults.

Pamukkale, Ephesus, Kusadasi

Today we will drive toward Ephesus which is one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Walk the marble-paved street with grooves made by chariot wheels. See the Fountain of Trajan, the Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre with a capacity of 24.000 spectators. Visit the Chapel of the Virgin Mary (Double Church), where the Third Ancient Council convened. Continue to visit the Basilica of St. John, early tradition associated John, the disciple of Jesus and the author of the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation, with the city of Ephesus.

After breakfast,visit the Museum of St Sophia (the Church of Divine Wisdom, built by Justinian). In the words of a 6th century historian ‘had not been since Adam and never would be again'. Then, visit to the Hippodrome, where chariot races and athletic events took place during the roman period. Continue to the Mosque of Suleyman the magnificient. In the afternoon, we visit the Kariye Museum (Saint Savior in Chora), Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, the Patriarchate of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Early in the morning,transfer to the airport and fly for Izmir then proceed to Pergamon. Pergamon (Bergama) the place where, wrote St John to the Church of Pergamon, Satan's throne is sited. Visit the Church of Pergamon, the red court, Acropolis. After lunch, we drive to, visit Thyatira which was the fourth of the seven churches of Asia Minor to receive an epistle from the Apostle John.

You will also have the chance to learn about some Turkish handicrafts and to visit the House of Virgin Mary, where it is believed she spent her last days. Your last visit of the day will be to Sirince village, located on top of a mountain, and famous for its fruit wines, which you can taste.

This morning we drive approximately 3 hours to Pamukkale, home of the magnificent white calcium terraces known as the travertines. We will tour the ancient city of Hierapolis, and you can take a dip amongst ancient columns in the hot springs that have been used since ancient times for their therapeutic powers. At the end of the tour, drive back to Kusadasi.

Our first stop is Esentepe, followed by a visit to Uchisar Castle. We then visit Goreme Open Air Museum and Ortahisar Castle. Afterwards we visit the fairy chimneys of Pasabag follwed by Devrent Valley.

South Cappadocia

This morning we head to Pigeon Valley and then Red Valley. After visiting some cave churches we head to one of the area's undergound cities. Afterwards we visit Cavusin village and finally the town of Avanos where we learn about hand-made pottery.

Istanbul to Ephesus

Early morning transfer to Istanbul airport for your flight to Izmir. You will be met on arrival and transferred to meet your tour group. Absorb yourself in history today with a guided tour of the ancient city of Ephesus. Feel the mystical atmosphere of the city and stadium where chariot and horse races were once held. We also visit the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You will also have the chance to learn about some Turkish handicrafts and to visit the House of Virgin Mary, where it is believed she spent her last days. Your last visit of the day will be to Sirince village, located on top of a mountain, and famous for its fruit wines, which you can taste.

This morning we drive approximately 3 hours to Pamukkale, home of the magnificent white calcium terraces known as the travertines. We will tour the ancient city of Hierapolis, and you can take a dip amongst ancient columns in the hot springs that have been used since ancient times for their therapeutic powers.
